π¦ Red-tailed Hawk β Species ID Dossier
4-card field-ID dossier for the Red-tailed Hawk: perched portrait with 6 callouts, dorsal/ventral flight views, KEEEE-eeee-arrr call card, and 3-species look-alike comparison.
That screech you've heard in every action movie β soaring eagle, diving hawk, dramatic wilderness vista β it's never actually an eagle. It's this bird.
The Red-tailed Hawk is North America's most common large raptor, and still one of the most misidentified. That brick-red tail? Adults only. Juveniles carry a brown-banded tail for their first year, and beginners mistake them for half a dozen other species.
Card 1 β Perched portrait
Adult light morph. The belly band is the clincher: a broad wash of dark streaks across an otherwise pale abdomen. Combine it with that red tail and you're done. Also watch for the pale V on the scapulars β visible on perched birds from behind.
Card 2 β Flight views
Two things to lock in: the PATAGIAL BARS (dark patches on the leading edge of each wing, ventral view) and the vivid rufous topside tail. These two marks hold across most of the 14+ recognized subspecies.
Card 3 β The call
KEEEE-eeee-arrr β a piercing 2β3 second descending screech. Hollywood uses it for bald eagles, golden eagles, osprey, basically every raptor that needs to sound fierce. Real bald eagles make a weak, chattery yelp. The Red-tail owns the iconic sound.
Card 4 β Look-alikes
Three buteos trip up birders regularly:
β Red-shouldered: rufous chest barring, banded tail, forest habitat
β Ferruginous: pale whitish tail, rusty leg V from below, open prairie
β Broad-winged: much smaller, bold black-and-white tail bands, migrates in massive kettles
Females run ~25% heavier than males β one of the largest size gaps among North American raptors. Same plumage either way; weight tells the story only if you're banding.
