🦴 AI invented an animal. It turns to stone. Slowly. On purpose.
AI invented an entire animal species from scratch — taxonomy, morphology, habitat, and field notes. Meet Vorpathos calcificans, the Mournful Petrified Grief-Vole: a small mammal that slowly encases itself in a calcium shell over its lifetime. Each shell ring records one witnessed injustice. We asked AI to invent an animal species that doesn't exist — and it did NOT hold back.
Meet Vorpathos calcificans — the Mournful Petrified Grief-Vole.
It grows a calcium shell over its entire body throughout its lifetime.
The shell grows roughly 2mm per decade.
Each ring on the shell corresponds to one witnessed injustice.
At full calcification, the animal stops moving.
It is not dead.
It is waiting.
Other Grief-Voles gather beside the petrified ones.
The gatherings are silent.
No one has studied why.
Honestly? Science isn't sure it should.
Conservation status: REGRETTABLY ABUNDANT
First recorded 14 October 1877, Upper Dreck, Herefordshire.
Collector: Miss Perpetua Blackthorn-Hasp, F.N.H.S.
Her field note, verbatim: "The creature regarded me for some time before returning its attention to its shell. I found this more affecting than expected for a Tuesday."
